Velma Murphy Hammons,
92, of 331 Marlowe Rd., Hiddenite, passed away Monday, April 28, 2008, at Iredell Memorial Hospital. She was born on March 13, 1916, in Jonesboro, Louisiana, to the late Wesley Marion and Mary Ann Murphy. She and her husband moved from Louisiana in 1986 to make North Carolina their home. Velma was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother and good friend. She was a homemaker and an active member of Pilgrim Baptist Church.

She was also a member of Rocky Springs Extension Homemakers and loved meeting her friends at the Alexander County Senior Center when she was able. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Julius Lester Hammons and nine brothers and sisters.   She is survived by her son, Jay Hammons and his wife Char of Overton, NV; her daughter Carolyn Hammons Campbell and husband Bill of Hiddenite, five grandchildren: Dawn Campbell Winkler and her husband Charles of Lenoir, William Keith Campbell and his wife Kim of Westwego, LA, Brian Chad Campbell and his wife Elissa of Alexandria, VA, Jason Todd Hammons and his wife Shawnee of Overton, NV and Cory Brian Hammons and his wife Meja of Las Vegas, NV; fourteen great grandchildren: Tara Hoyle, Ryan Conino, Keirstin Charles, Kallie Skinner, Keith Campbell, Abby Campbell, Nicholas Campbell, Austin Travis, Lexi Hammons, Kambree Hammons, Tanner Hammons, Cianna Olson, Jaylie Hammons and Abbie Hammons; three great great grandchildren: Cameron Hoyle, Paul Charles and Carly Charles. Velma will be missed and will always be in the hearts of those who loved her. The family would like to thank the many caring nurses at Iredell Memorial Hospital and Hospice of Iredell County for their excellent care during this difficult time. The family would also like to thank the congregation of Pilgrim Baptist Church and especially her Pastor Chris Benfield for all his loving support; and a heartfelt thank you to Alice Shook for being a special friend and caregiver..  Funeral services will be conducted at Pilgrim Baptist Church in Hiddenite Wednesday at 2:00pm. Pastor Chris Benfield will officiate. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
